Aspect of Time in How to Train Your
Dragon, 2010

The aspect of time during the extend of
this film is found in the development of the main characters and the
relationship between them. At the very start of the film we are
introduced to the village of Berk and the people living in it. They
are a Viking colony living on this island village, under the
direction of Hiccup's father chieftain Stoick
the Vast
and
all hold
on to the desire and the tradition built along the line of the
killing and hunting of Dragons which
frequently raid their livestock. At
the very start we can see great
hatred from the villagers towards the Dragons, whilst themselves
having a strong bond between them.
The
very first transformation can be seen when Hiccup
finds the Dragon he had downed during the last raid and goes for the
kill. Like
the rest of the villagers, Hiccup
was eager to kill this Dragon and gain a high status as it was a
Nightfury
Dragon, the most feared kind of Dragon, but when he came to about
striking it, he saw
its eyes and felt sorry for the creature. Instead he cut it loose and
stepped back. Immediately we can see another transformation, as the
Dragon attempts to kill Hiccup,
but instead returns the favour and does not harm him, against its
instincts, also shows that the Dragon is intelligent. A
start of the turning over of the relationship between Viking kind and
Dragon kind starts showing at this point and a sense of compassion
arises.
After this incident, we see Hiccup returning to the now
flightless Dragon, which he had called Toothless and by
using his crafting skills he managed to give it a prosthetic tail
wing after it got ripped off in the crush. Using the knowledge he
gains from Dragon Training, along with his ever improving
relationship with the Dragon, he becomes able to ride Toothless,
which helped him get the attention of the girl he is attracted to,
Astrid, as well as grading first in Dragon Training which in
turn leads him to a life of fame. All this while trying to show the
community, although unsuccessful, that Dragons are different then
what they think, and therefore loosing his father's trust. Therefore,
we see the relationship between Hiccup and Toothless
turning over bit by bit from that of compassion to a doubtful one
then to a friendly and eventually a trustful one. We also see the
relationship between Astrid and Hiccup turn from a
casual one to a one of courtship and also see the way the villagers
look at Hiccup, from that of seeing him as the weak son of a
great chieftain to adoring him as popular figure, while Hiccup
losing his father's trust since in his eyes he is seen as a traitor
by defending the Dragon.
His unsuccessful attempt had put Toothless in the hands of his
stubborn father who uses it to guide the way to the Dragons' Nest in
their next attempt to raid it. Upon breaching a part of the island
all the Dragons flew off and a giant Dragon that was acting very
similar to a bee queen came out on the offensive towards the Viking
warriors. All hope was lost after it burned down their ships, until
Hiccup turned up with his friends, all riding on Dragon back.
Hiccup had showed up on a borrowed ride since his Dragon
Toothless was captured by his father. Upon arrival, Hiccup
goes looking for Toothless and finds it bound to a burned and
now sinking ship. Here is where Stoick the Vast has another
change of heart and rescues both his son and the Dragon. This was
Hiccup's big day since he has finally managed to show the
community what Dragons are really like and saves the day by taking on
the queen Dragon alone with Toothless. At the end of the film
we see all the relationships between the main characters being
resolved, that of the Dragons and the villagers of Berk, that of
Astrid and Hiccup, and Hiccup and his Father.
The film ends with a sour yet happy ending, where the Vikings and the
Dragons are living together in harmony and although Hiccup had
lost his foot during the battle he still jokes about it.

The
Aspect of Time in The Lone Ranger, 2013

The Lone Ranger is a great
film which manipulates the aspect time. To start with the majority of
the film is a flashback retelling of the story of the Lone Ranger by
a Native Comanche Indian to a young boy named Will at a Fair stand in
the year 1933.
This is not the only flashback seen
in the film. In fact, the first flashback is actually a flashforward
within the general flashback where we see the Lone Ranger, John
Rieds together with his
partner Tonto rob a bank for an unknown reason.
After Will expresses his confusion to this Tonto returns to the
flashback where he tells the story from the beginning. Due to the
extend of this particular flashback we are reminded that this is so
when Will gets confused again since the story says that tracks where
found in Indian Territory, where the white men did not live. Tonto
continues to explain in flashback how the treaty was broken because a
group of outlaws led by the outlaw Butch Cavendish had disguised
themselves as Comanche horsemen and raided the riverside settlements.
At a point within this flashback, we
are taken further back in time in a telling by the Comanche chieftain
of how Tonto became so confused and strange. This
was due
to a bad trade he did in his childhood that had cost the lives of his
village people and where he made a vow to search for the traitors and
bring justice to them.
Upon returning to the general flashback we find John and Tonto
escaping from the Comanche and making their way to the silver mine at
the beginning of the river, which was the cause of the bad trade
Tonto made when he was young. Upon arriving we witness how John and
Tonto interfere with the plans of Butch Cavendish to mine the silver
and become rich.
Much later in the story, Tonto tells
that John and himself had blown up the bridge supporting the iron
rail. Upon Will questioning from where did they get the explosives,
Tonto reminds him of the first flashback, in which they robbed the
bank, which was done to steal explosives to blow the bridge. The
blown bridge would later be the demise of Latham
Cole who in charge of the railway and was working with Butch
Cavendish.
With the introduction of film, they
have had a major impact of the thoughts and feelings of the people
that watch them and on society itself. Early in the 1920s and 1930s
Hollywood tapped into the film genre of Family Films but it did not
catch on until 'The Wizard of Oz' came out in 1939, his film had set
the grounds for this genre, which is sometimes found as Children's
Films. These Genre of films, as the name implies, are greatly
appropriate to be watched by members of a family, therefore they are
appropriate for an audience of all ages. To be so, they most often
contain a storyline which attracts younger audiences, while at the
same time has contents directed towards adults and older audiences.
An other characteristics of Family films that makes them so appealing
and loved by people of all ages is that they are bright, sharp and
colourful in appearance. There scenes are taken or put in bright
spaces, usually in daylight and the characters most often wear
colourful costumes even though they may be going through a hard time.
A company that specializes in this
genre of films is without any doubt The Walt Disney Company. The
Company, which was funded by Walt Disney in 1923, published its first
feature film, which falls in the Family genre, 'Snow White and the
Seven Dwarves' in 1937. Although technicolor technology was
relatively new at that time, this 75 year old masterpiece still had
managed to provide a colourful experience for audiences off all ages.
Nowadays, this film can be found with enriched colours that are equal
to the capability of today's technology.
Walt Disney company is not alone when
it comes to publishing Family films. Other Companies and Independent
Producers have and still are publishing films that fall in this
genre. A franchise of films such as this is the 'Home Alone'
franchise. With the first film in a series of five out in 1990 and
the final one out in 2012, the series of films show the adventures
that a ten year old kid (changes along the series) goes through when
he is left alone at home or find himself in a house by himself and is
rivalling a group of thieves or so all by himself and keeps putting
them through all kinds of traps to force them to run off. In this
franchise we also see the bright colours that I mentioned earlier on.

Task 2: Essay
Inspiration
from Films

Other more recent example of Family
films are 'Despicable Me', 'Shrek' and 'The Smurfs' and they also
show this technique of bright and sharp colours.
Watching a Family film is relaxing and
restful, even on the mind, as they are made in such a way that the
viewer does not require to do any mental activity to understand the
storyline and jokes from the film. So, in my project I wish to
suggest this calm and relaxing aura and so I would like to take these
vibrant colours, and put them up as a choice for the client to choose
from to have a say in the configuration of the chair which
corresponds to their liking.
